April 2013: FMP’s John Salamone Co-Authors Article on Big Data. Richard Hartman, COO and Co-Founder of OhMyGov, Inc., and John Salamone, Vice President at Federal Management Partners Inc discuss how to use big data to drive agency decisions in the Senior Executive Association’s April Newsletter. Hartman and Salamone make the argument that by becoming aware and utilizing new technologies, federal executives can defend their decisions for targeted cuts to congress, the public and their employees and also make the case for sustaining effective programs while investing in emerging programs. April 2013: FMP’s John Salamone on Federal News Radio. Diversity is on the upswing in the Senior Executive Service. The Office of Personnel Management says right now more women and minorities work in the SES than at any other time in the last five years. John Salamone, vice president at Federal Management Partners, spoke with Francis Rose about diversity in the SES ranks and improvements that still need to be made. March 2013: FMP Honored as 2013 Helios Apollo Awards Finalist. FMP has been named a finalist for the 2013 Helios Apollo Awards, which recognizes Washington employers who promote employee development and engagement as their organizational culture. FMP is one of eight finalists in the Tria category. “I am enthused and encouraged by the commitment to employee development, engagement and community that our 2013 finalists demonstrate,” said Kathy Albarado, CEO of Helios. “We congratulate FMP on being named a finalist and look forward to coming together in May to celebrate.” FMP was selected by an independent panel for our support of employee development initiatives to help grow our organization, our employees and our community. December 2012: FMP's Ellen Tunstall Named NAPA Fellow. Ellen Tunstall, FMP Senior Advisor, was recently appointed as a National Academy for Public Administration (NAPA) Fellow. The 752 Fellows of the National Academy possess an unmatched wealth of expertise and serve as the cornerstone of the organization. New Fellows are elected by the entire membership after a rigorous nomination process that takes place each spring. FMP congratulates Ellen Tunstall on this well-deserved honor.
November 2012: FMP's John Salamone on Federal News Radio. New numbers from the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey show Federal employees' confidence in their leaders isn't growing. November 2012: FMP sponsors event with the Partnership for Public Service. On November 8, FMP sponsored “Growing Talent: Creating Integrated and Effective Training and Development Programs” in conjunction with the Partnership for Public Service. This interactive event was designed to help attendees create meaningful training, mentoring and career development opportunities for participants in their agencies’ Pathways Programs. Specifically, attendees learned about the role of training and development in the Pathways Programs; found out how other organizations have successfully built integrated, innovative and resource-efficient curricula for students and recent graduates; and determined how these strategies can be applied at their agencies. FMP was proud to be a part of this event!
November 2012: VA Learning University wins Workforce Optimas Award for Service. For empowering employees to shape their own careers and identify opportunities for development, Veterans Affairs Learning University is the 2012 winner of the Optimas Award for Service for MyCareer@VA . To reduce high turnover and meet soaring demand for VA services, in October 2010 VALU launched MyCareer@VA, a website that provides employees with customizable career-mapping tools, internal job boards and recommended training programs for different career paths. FMP is proud to be a partner in the MyCareer@VA program which supports the Department of Veterans Affairs in its recruitment, retention, and career development goals. September 2012: MyCareer@VA Recognized by the Harvard Kennedy School as a Bright Idea in Government. The Bright Ideas award is offered every other year to further recognize and promote creative government initiatives and partnerships. Thousands of ideas are submitted each year but only a few (111 this year) receive this prestigious recognition. Additionally, MyCareer@VA was specifically featured in an article on Business Wire promoting particularly interesting innovations from this year’s Bright Idea cohort. FMP is proudly developing the implementing MyCareer@VA in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs. This award is a testament to the hard work and innovation of the MyCareer@VA team. September 2012: FMP's Lisa Sper on Federal News Radio. Lisa Sper, Managing Consulting at FMP, joined FEDtalk to talk about the current state of training in the Federal government. A new report from CIO.gov says agencies such as the Social Security Administration that urged their managers to attend formal program management training, subsequently saw a significant increase in the measurable proficiency of its program managers. Lisa Sper and other guests discussed what other agencies are doing to increase training, and some of the best practices that agencies can follow to increase employee proficiency and maximize their trainings. August 2012: FMP's John Salamone on Federal News Radio. John Salamone joined Francis Rose on In Depth, a Federal News Radio production, to discuss the federal budget cuts and pay freezes. President Barack Obama says Federal employees won't get a raise until the expiration of the continuing resolution Congress is promising at the end of March 2013. Combine the extended pay freeze with a close look in Congress at conference spending and the general attitude in the country toward federal employees, and HR pros say it's getting harder to keep talent at agencies. July 2012: MyCareer@VA Touted as an Example for Other Agencies. FMP is currently developing and implementing the MyCareer@VA program. We are excited that the program is being recognized as a model for other agencies. The website, MyCareerAtVA.va.gov, prompts employees to plug in their skills and experience and then provides them a variety of jobs throughout the department that — with some additional training and education — could be a fit for them down the road. June 2012: FMP discusses “The People Equation” in Government Executive. FMP’s John Salamone and Ellen Tunstall co-authored an article entitled “The People Equation” that gives five suggestions to strengthen the integration of workforce projections and budgeting, and address the administration’s goal of reducing discretionary spending by 5 percent in 2014 while building workforce capacity. May 2012: FMP sponsors event with the Partnership for Public Service. On May 23, FMP sponsored “Creating Pathways to Success: Developing and Guiding Talent at Your Agency” in conjunction with the Partnership for Public Service. This event was designed to help attendees better leverage training and development mechanisms to attract talent, educate and engage employees, and fill key competency gaps. Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to learn from their peers and subject matter experts from both the public and private sectors as they shares strategies and resources that have worked well at other organizations and demonstrate how these practices may be applied at their agencies.
Apr 2012: CFPB and FMP's Maggie Moore presented at the Training Officers Consortium Annual Institute. Their case study was entitled “Come Onboard: Building a Workplace Community of Values at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau” – highlighting best practices for designing and implementing 21st century onboarding programs. Jan 2012: OPM Releases Executive Onboarding Report Citing FMP’s Work - The US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) recently released a guide to executive onboarding entitled—Hit the Ground Running: a Model Executive Onboarding Program. This report discusses the necessity for effective executive onboarding as well as best practices for developing, implementing, and evaluation such programs. Spotlight on Executive Onboarding, an article authored by FMP Senior Consultant, Maggie Moore, was quoted several times throughout this report, including the following: “Agencies may readily enhance the effectiveness of onboarding programs by considering how to support work/life issues, including how the onboarding programs may help the families of new executives adjust to a new job, particularly where the job required relocation.” Additionally, the report speaks about the success of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) New Executive Transition (NExT) Program which FMP developed and implemented. FMP’s work with the NExT Program at NSF was touted as one of the few successfully implemented onboarding programs in the federal government. Read the OPM article

Oct 2011: FMP Celebrates 20 Years – Federal Management Partners, Inc. (FMP) is celebrating 20 years of serving the Federal Government this year. Oct 2011: FMP authoring human capital management book. FMP has begun work on People Achieving Results: What Really Works in Government, a full-length book capturing proven human capital management best practices in the Federal government. We will draw on best practices we have experienced through our consulting work as well as from broader research. We expect to complete this project by the end of 2012 and will provide more information over the coming months, including opportunities for how you can contribute.

July 2011: FMP event with the Partnership for Public Service. FMP recently sponsored an Event of Excellence entitled When Money Doesn’t Pay: Motivating Employees During Tight Times hosted at the Partnership for Public Service. The session, moderated by FMP staff, highlighted insights from three agency executives for motivating and retaining employees. July 2011: FMP partners with the Society for Human Resource Management. Recently, FMP deployed a series of training courses related to Human Resource functions in the Federal environment. This effort was a partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
