An experienced professional…

I came to FMP after ten years of operational human resource management experience as a generalist at large, private sector, professional services firms.  I had recently started a family and was looking for an opportunity to do challenging work, in a flexible, family-friendly environment, where I could have a material impact on the performance and success of the firm.

At FMP I was able to immediately step in to a key role on a project that allowed me to apply my experience in the corporate world to help a government agency re-design their employee on-boarding process.  I have since played various roles on projects ranging from developing a human capital strategic plan for the DoD Acquisition, Technology & Logistics workforce to implementing a new service delivery model for the Human Resource Management division of the National Science Foundation.  Every project I have worked on at FMP has required a combination of a strong foundation in HR concepts and practice, solid consulting and project management skills, and a great deal of creativity.

Working at FMP has shown me that it is possible to be part of a successful company that respects me as an individual, demonstrates a genuine concern for its employees’ quality of life, and truly strives to make a difference for its clients.  Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of my work with FMP has been having the opportunity to develop relationships with clients – the feeling that you get when you know you have earned their trust by helping them solve problems that they may have thought were unsolvable.  That’s what success looks like at FMP.

A recent graduate…

After finishing my master’s degree, I was eager to put my few years of work experience and newly gained advanced degree knowledge to work. I craved a challenging yet relaxed work environment full of opportunities to grow, stimulating people and a rewarding compensation structure. FMP was a perfect fit!

Immediately I was placed on a project team that fit with my current skills but also offered excellent developmental opportunities. The project manager and team were excited to have me onboard and their passion for the client and human capital consulting was infectious. Within weeks, I was given the lead role on a project task and I was interfacing directly with the client’s management team members. I was also assigned a FMP buddy/mentor to assist me in my acclimation to FMP.

It is hard to believe that I have been at FMP for almost a year now. The time has gone by so quickly yet I can’t even begin to list all that I have experienced this year. I have learned so much about consulting and HR practices, and have honed my project management and problem-solving skills. Additionally, I have had fun along the way and have been rewarded for my hard work and growth. I am proud of FMP’s commitment to providing outstanding customer service to federal agencies and I am proud to call myself a FMP consultant. I am really looking forward to next year and my continued professional growth along with FMP!

A former federal employee...

Working at FMP as a retired Federal employee has proven to be a pleasant surprise for me.  After spending more than 30 years in government, I had several pre-conceived notions about what it might mean to work as a consultant.  I also had some reservations about how the private sector’s business focus might conflict with my public service orientation.  These fears turned out to be unfounded, as FMP turned out to be the perfect place to have a continuing role in helping to improve government.

FMP’s focus on helping Federal agencies with strategic human capital issues allows me to apply my experience and expertise in a truly “big picture” way.  I am able to work with clients to identify desired outcomes and ideal end-states, while recognizing and understanding real-world obstacles and hindrances.  Clients really appreciate working with someone who can help get them to where they want to go, but who also understands how government works (and doesn’t work).

I have been especially pleased by FMP’s wide variety of clients.  Even after a long career serving in several different agencies, it turns out that FMP’s client list includes many organizations with whom I was not familiar, or that I now see in entirely different light.  And this client list is so varied, and has so many different needs, that I find myself constantly being surprised at the wide scope of challenges and evolving issues confronting these agencies.  Not once have I felt that I’m dealing with the “same old thing,” much to my delight.

FMP’s small size and its focus on building client relationships often results in going beyond just delivering a specified product, and instead often leads to FMP being viewed as a trusted partner and sounding board.  This has allowed me to play a more pronounced  role in helping clients identify problems and possible solutions than I had originally thought would be the case.  This has contributed to my feeling good about the fact that, apart from the business motive, we really do have opportunities to help government become more efficient.

Finally, the wide variety of issues and situations in which FMP is involved constantly challenges me to do research, refresh my knowledge, and remain up-to-date with government-wide and agency-specific matters.  So rather than just relying on lessons from my government experience that could become stagnant with time, I find instead that I’m continuing to learn and acquire new skills in my FMP consultant role, which makes this a truly satisfying second-career
