5 Ways to Spark Creativity at Work

1. Take a Mental Break

It can be difficult to be creative when you’re feeling burned out. Taking a mental break before tackling complex tasks can actually help boost creativity. Read a book or grab some coffee; it’s up to you!

2. Visualize It

Next time you need your team to do some creative problem-solving, get together and use white boards, Post-it notes, magazines, or whatever visual tools you have on-hand to add momentum to your brainstorming session. Here at FMP we even utilize our chalkboard wall to help visualize our thoughts!

3. Get Moving

Did you know adding a physical activity to your day aids in promoting creativity? A lunchtime walk, biking to work, or even taking the stairs instead of the elevator are all great ways to kick-start your creativity and gain a fresh perspective.

4. Start With A New Approach

The golden rule in any good brainstorming session is to never criticize an idea. It’s hard to adhere to but nothing stifles creativity faster than the word “NO.”  Flip the script on traditional problem-solving and empathize about the problem and the experiences that grow from the situation. The sooner a team feels empowered to share their thoughts, the sooner you’ll be able to produce new, creative solutions.

5. Network at Work

Gain a new point of view and get your creativity flowing by inviting colleagues that fall outside of your ‘go-to’ group to your brainstorming session. From IT to accounting, adding diverse personalities to the mix will give you a broader outlook to help spark your creativity.
